Helping Tampa Bay Snook Populations

The Kayak Fishing ClassicS has joined in along with all the ClassicS sponsors in support of the Snook Watch Program. The program is opperated by the Snook Foundation and is a powerful means to critically needed snook data collection. Anglers that happen to catch a snook, record the requested data onto a waterproof chart provided by the foundation. The data is entered and used by the foundation and other like organizations to assess the populations of below slot, within slot and over slot limit snook.

It is important to realize that snook are the bellwether of our estuaries and if they have problems, so do other species. After last winters’ harsh conditions and resulting fish kill, the snook populations in Florida are down reportedly by 7%.

The ClassicS’ has instated the Snook Watch Program into the remaining events for the 2010 Series Year in an effort to assist the foundation and help the snook. Although snook are not the target of any event, anglers that happen to catch a snook are requested to record the much needed information onto the provided Snook Watch form, prior to the proper release. The information will be gratefullly collected at event photo weigh ins and given to the Snook Foundation. We fell that it is time that all anglers become involved in helping the snook and our estuaries.

Wing House Redfish Madness June 25 & 26

The Green Key Redfish Madness will be Hosted by the Wing House Bar & Grill of New Port Richey June 25 & 26. We are very please to have the famous Ker’s Wing House as our Sponsor Host for this event.

Redfish Madness will be a redfish tournament using artificial baits and flies only. The Madness will begin on June 25 at 7 Pm at the New Port Richey Wing House located at 6515 US Hwy 19. This is conveniently located on the corner of Green Key so the kayak launch is only a few blocks away. Kayak Launch will be on June 26 at daylight. You will be able to register for the event as soon as the Homosass Hazard, Extreme Tarpon Classic registration closes. If you are on the preferred anglers list you will be notified. If you are not and would like to be, just visit the ClassicS website and contact us.

The Madness will be a 3 fish total length Classic to determen the winners. Stayed tuned to the ClassicS TV station for updates as well. It’s Gonna Be Mad!

Green Key Redfish Madness

The Green Key Redfish Madness is coming up after the Homosassa Hazard. The Madness will be launched from Green Key in New Port Richey, Florida. This will of course be a CPR Classic, as are all of the ClassicS and will be a Fly and Artificial baits only. The Redfish Madness will be unique in that the anglers will enter a total of 3 Redfish for a combined length to score. The tournament Host Sponsor and dates will be announced soon. The Whiskey Joe’s Mammoth Slam Classic will fish for Trout & Redfish and is a photo release tournament. Fish data is shared with various state and local marine wildlife organizations for the purpose of marine research. Registration is on line at http://www.KayakFishingClassicS.com and is now open. Early registrants gain tournament bonus points which add onto the earned total points so take advantage of early registration. There are numerous, generous sponsors that will be making awards. Sponsors include; Freedom Hawk Kayaks, Albright Fishing Products, Ocean Waves Sunglasses, Aqua Designs, High Roller Custom Wooden Lures, Kayak Kanopy, Kayak Fishing Magazine, Kayak Angler Magazine, Florida Fly Fishing Magazine and Windham Designs. In addition, contestants earn points to qualify for the Invitational National Championship tournament and a shot at the grand prize from Freedom Hawk Kayaks, the new Freedom 12 kayak. There are two fishing divisions in the ClassicS, Fly Fishing and Light Tackle. Contestants in the Whiskey Joe’s Mammoth Slam Classic may fish where they like. There is a boat ramp on the Courtney Campbell Cswy which will put fishermen onto a mangrove lined bay where fishing is reportedly good. Other possible areas include the Double Branch Creek, Philippe Park and the Alafia River which are all close by, as well as right from the beach at Whiskey Joe’s. In the event of bad weather, the Mammoth Slam Classic will be held two weeks after the original date. RESULTS – Old Tampa Bay Monster Redfish Classic (It was COLD!)

The weather presented some very tuff conditions for the Kayak Fishing ClassicS Old Tampa Bay Monster Redfish Classic last weekend. The high temperature for the day was only 35 degrees and that lasted for only a few minutes. As if the cold was not enough, Mother Nature added some freezing rain to the mix, just to spice it up. Needless to say the fishing was very tough but for those how prevailed, the rewards were great. The generous sponsors of the ClassicS showered the winners with some very impressive awards. First place went to Derick Burges, second place went to James West and third place went to Justin West. Each of them received the following awards;

Old Tampa Bay Monster Redfish Classic

The Old Tampa Bay Monster Redfish Classic is January 8th & 9th 2010. Sponsor Host Jack Willies Tiki Bar & Grill will host the Captain’s Meeting on the 8th at 7 PM and the Awards Ceremony on the 9th at 7 PM. Jack Willies is located in Oldsmar, Florida in the Tampa Bay area. Fishing launch sites include Philippe Park and the Upper Tampa Bay Park on the Double Branch Creek. The creek was selected as a second launch/fishing area due to concerns about the cold weather. The creek is protected and should be comfortable. The contestants that are in town from New York area are commenting on how nice it is here at 50 degrees, but we Floridians are cold. The adult redfish winter up in upper Old Tampa Bay and will be right in the creek and in Mobbly Bay at the creek mouth as well as the point at Philippe Park.
